Why Tschang-Yeul Kim Waterdrops Are Iconic
The Tschang-Yeul Kim Waterdrops exhibition at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art Korea (MMCA) in Seoul showcases the signature works of the celebrated Korean artist Tschang-Yeul Kim (1929–2021). After moving to Paris in 1969, Kim introduced his first water drops painting, Event of Night, at the Salon de Mai in 1972. The French art scene recognized him as a unique artist who fused Eastern meditative sensibilities with Western modernism. Over the next 50 years, Tschang-Yeul Kim created water drops paintings on various surfaces, including canvas, newspaper, and burlap, each work reflecting its own distinct characteristics and emotions.
The Evolution of Tschang-Yeul Kim Waterdrops
Kim’s works show clear features across different periods. His early works from the 1950s and 1960s convey intense emotion shaped by the Korean War and personal experiences. In the 1970s, he discovered water drops and experimented with them in a repetitive and meditative manner, opening a new world of artistic expression. During the 1980s, he combined Chinese characters with water drops, achieving a harmony between East and West and completing his unique artistic vision. From the 1990s onward, he expanded exhibitions both domestically and internationally, continuing to explore water drops painting using diverse materials and techniques.

The Artistic Meaning of Tschang-Yeul Kim Waterdrops
At first glance, the water drops appear very realistic, but they are not simply about realism. They symbolize memory, healing and meditation. Kim once explained that he painted water drops as a way to overcome the trauma he experienced during the Korean war.

The Enduring Fame of Tschang-Yeul Kim Waterdrops
At this exhibition, visitors can closely experience works spanning the entire career of Tschang-Yeul Kim, exclusively at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art Korea (MMCA) in Seoul. Once at MMCA, go to the ticketing area on the same floor. Luckily, they issued free admission ticket to commemorate [2025 KOREA ART FESTIVAL] when I visited. Normally, Tschang-Yeul Kim’s exhibition ticket costs 2,000 KRW.

Look for the gallery 8 sign near the entrance. It’s recommend to start on the B1 floor at galleries 6 and 7, then move to Gallery 8 on the 2nd floor.
